Youth Mission and Outreach

Throughout the year, we have many opportunities to put our faith into action and have a little bit of fun, too. Whether it is cooking dinner for residents of the Ronald McDonald House or packing bags of food at the Food Bank, we try to seek and serve Christ in every person.

From caring for the sick, the friendless, and the needy, to supporting other ministries, we facilitate a minimum of ten direct contact service hours per semester (the base requirement for many local High Schools and Honor Societies). There are a number of ongoing projects in which the youth regularly participate.

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a summer day camp with the purpose to incorporate themed activities that entertain kids so that they can learn about God. Vacation Bible School is an easy way to get kids involved in church while learning about the love of Christ. VBS lasts about five weekdays in the summer and is run by adult and youth volunteers. The Youth of Good Shepherd is a vital part of making VBS a success.  With over 150 children attending, it is important to have our youth act as counselors to minister to these children through various activities.

Tacos Not Bombs provides meals to those who are in need on Sunday mornings at Artesian Park in Downtown Corpus Christi.  Our youth help by providing food, blessing bags, serving, and cleaning.

The Coastal Bend Food Bank (CBFB) is a nonprofit organization that solicits and distributes food which might otherwise go to waste or be discarded by manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. Since 1982, CBFB has been fighting hunger in the Coastal Bend by providing food and personal care products to various charity and service agencies.  The Coastal Bend Food Bank reduces hunger in South Texas through food distribution and nutrition education.  The Youth of Good Shepherd enjoys serving as volunteers at the Coastal Bend Food Bank by assisting with their Kid’s Backpack Program.  The Coastal Bend Food Bank’s Kids’ Backpack program aims to provide children with nutritious food to take home for the weekend. Backpacks are filled with nutritious, child-friendly food and are distributed on the day before weekends or holiday vacations.

Trinity Towers/Brookdale Retirement Community is a retirement facility located near Good Shepherd.  They specialize in offering our local senior population independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, continuing care retirement communities, home health, therapy, and hospice. The Youth of Good Shepherd volunteer at Trinity Towers in various ways.  Two examples would be caroling to the residents during the Christmas season and Home Blessings during Epiphany.
