Good Shepherd’s Corner
Founded in 1971 by a group of women from the Church of the Good Shepherd with a heart to help others in need, Good Shepherd’s Corner is a consignment and retail shop that benefits the community in several ways. It has given thousands of dollars in charitable donations to the ministries of the Church, as well as to missions around the city of Corpus Christi.
Today, Good Shepherd’s Corner (also referred to as “The Corner”) serves those in need in the nearby neighborhoods by selling gently used men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes, appliances, and household items at significantly reduced prices. Men and women benefit by being able to buy quality goods for just a few dollars. Some customers use the store as a means of income, by bringing in items for consignment and collecting small proceeds from the sales each month. Most of the clothing and resale items are donated, so the Corner itself makes a generous profit, which it donates to charities and missions.
The Acacia Job Training Program
In 2016, The Corner added a new venture to their Mission Statement to include a paid job-training program for sheltered women. The Acacia Job Training Program focuses on sales, customer service and business skills to prepare women for living-wage jobs to be able to support themselves and their families. The Acacia Job Program is a bridge between job skills training and full employment. The program addresses not only business skills, but it also seeks to be a part of the healing of the whole person. These women are individuals recommended to us by their case managers and interviewed by us.
It takes many volunteers to receive, mark, categorize, and display the merchandise. The Corner is always looking for more volunteers. The men and women who work at the Corner enjoy lively fellowship plus the blessing of being able to interact with the customers and help those in need.
