Our Mother’s Day Offering is an opportunity to recognize the women in our lives who nurture, teach, and lead with a gift in their honor or memory.
This year we have chosen Foster Village Corpus Christi as the recipient of our Mother’s Day Offering. Foster Village was stared three years ago by our own Rebecca and Jamin Welch. They have created a place to use as a resource center and a place to offer support to children and families in foster care.
There are over 400,000 children in the foster care system in the United States with 1,000 of them in the South Texas area. Children in the foster care system often grow up with PTSD and depression, are more likely to become homeless, make up 80% of human trafficking victims, and 90% of youth with five or more foster care placements enter the criminal justice system. But it does not have to be this way. When these youth are given nurturing environments, they can get the tools they need to succeed. This includes having a community of support. Most families foster for less than a year citing burnout and lack of support as the reason for stopping.
When a child is placed in foster care, they often arrive with only the clothes on their back. Foster Village offers a place for families and children to get clothing, new beds, car seats, toiletries, and other basic necessities completely free and within 24 hours of being placed.
Foster families experience unique challenges when caring for children who might have been abused, neglected, or have been separated from their family. When others who have been on the same journey of fostering children can provide support, caregivers are strengthened and encouraged as a steadfast source of healing and safety to children. Foster Village provides access to support groups, respite care, parents’ nights out, and other important resources.
